Maharishi Mahesh Yogi : A Profile |
Top |

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
is a controversial
guru, associated with
Transcendental Meditation and the
Beatles.
Maharishi graduated from
Allahabad University with a degree in physics. He studied for
thirteen years with Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of
Jyotir Math. Then in
1955, after spending two years in silence in the Himalayas, he began
teaching his
Transcendental Meditation technique. In
1957 Maharishi founded the
Transcendental Meditation (or TM) movement and began the first of
his many world tours to bring his technique to people on all continents.
He has written a number of books on
Vedic wisdom and the Vedas as the science of
consciousness.
Maharishi has used modern technology to further his teachings -- he has
created the
Maharishi Open University as an
online teaching outlet, he has a weekly video press conference and uses
satellite and the Internet for his Maharishi Broadcasting.
He
also initiated a new type of currency, the
RAAM.
A Glimpse
of Maharishi's Achievements
Over Forty Years Around the World
(1957-1998)
Maharishi Mahesh
Yogi is widely regarded as the foremost scientist in the field of
consciousness, and considered to be the greatest teacher in the world
today. Maharishi has completely restored the thousands of years-old
scattered Vedic Literature for the total significance of its theory and
practice, and has organized it in the form of a complete science of
consciousness.
Maharishi's Vedic
Science and Technology unfolds the full potential of Natural Law in
human consciousness as the basis of improving all areas of life.
The Transcendental
Meditation® program, the subjective technology of Maharishi's
Vedic Science and Technology, is the most widely practiced and
extensively researched program of self-development in the world.
Maharishi is now
establishing
Maharishi
Vedic
Universities and Maharishi Vedic Schools throughout the world to offer
mastery over Natural Law to every individual and to perpetuate life in
accordance with Natural Law -- perfection in every profession -- and
create Natural Law based problem-free government in every country --
governments with the ability to prevent problems.
1957:
Maharishi founds the world-wide Spiritual Regeneration Movement.
1957-1967:
Maharishi introduces research in the field of consciousness and brings
to light seven states of consciousness.
1970:
The first scientific research validating the effects of Maharishi's
Transcendental Meditation programme is published in the international
scientific journals Science and Scientific American.
1972:
Maharishi inaugurates his World Plan and creates a new science -- the
Science of Consciousness, the Science of Creative Intelligence, training
2,000 teachers of this science [by now 40,000] to bring the timeless
message of Transcending to all parts of the globe.
1975:
Maharishi
discovers the Constitution of the Universe -- the lively potential of
Natural Law -- in Rk Ved, and discovers the structuring dynamics of Rk
Ved in the entire Vedic Literature.
On the basis of
the discovery of the Maharishi Effect, Maharishi celebrates the Dawn of
the Age of Enlightenment around the world, with grand celebrations on
all continents.
India's Lok Sabha issues a proclamation, one of many
issued by governments around the globe, commending Maharishi's
world-wide activities.
1976:
Maharishi creates
a World Government for the Age of Enlightenment with its sovereignty in
the domain of consciousness and authority in the invincible power of
Natural Law.
Maharishi
introduces the TM-Sidhi Programme and the experience of bubbling bliss
in Yogic Flying to create supreme mind-body co-ordination in the
individual and coherence in world consciousness.
1978:
Maharishi
inaugurates the "Ideal Society Campaign in 108 Countries".
Maharishi creates
the World Peace Project, sending teams of Yogic Flyers to the most
troubled areas of the world, to calm the violence through their
self-referral performance of the Transcendental Meditation & TM-Sidhi
programme.
Maharishi
formulates his Absolute Theories of Government, Education, Health,
Defence, Economy, Management, and Law and Order to raise every area of
life to perfection.
1980:
Maharishi brings
to light the commentary of Rk Veda, Apaurusheya Bhashya, as the
self-generating, self-perpetuating structure of consciousness.
1981:
Maharishi
organises the centuries-old scattered Vedic Literature as the literature
of a perfect science -- Maharishi's Vedic Science and Technology.
1984:
The first group
of 7,000 Yogic Flyers gathers in
Fairfield,
Iowa,
USA.
Scientific research on this assembly validates Maharishi's prediction
that when the square root of one percent of the world's population
practices the TM-Sidhi programme, including Yogic Flying, together in
one place, positive trends increase and negative tendencies decrease
throughout the whole world.
1985:
Maharishi brings
to light the full potential of Ayur-Veda, Gandharva Veda, Dhanur-Veda,
Sthapatya Veda, and Jyotish to create a disease-free and problem-free
family of nations.

Maharishi
formulates his Master Plan to Create Heaven on Earth for the
reconstruction of the whole world, inner and outer.
Maharishi brings
to light Supreme Political Science to introduce automation in
administration and create conflict-free politics and a problem-free
government in every country.
Maharishi inspires
the formation of a new political party, the Natural Law Party, in an
increasing number of countries throughout the world, to enrich and
support national law with Natural Law.
1993:
Maharishi
inaugurates Global Ram Raj.
Maharishi's
Absolute Theory of Government and his practical formula "A Group for a
Government" -- gaining support of Natural Law by creating and
maintaining a group of Yogic Flyers -- is verified politically in
Mozambique and scientifically by a multi-million dollar experiment
Washington, DC in the USA.

THE INTERVIEW |
Top |
What the TM technique is, how it works - and the goal
Since
Maharishi first introduced the Transcendental Meditation Programme
in 1957, his message has always been practical and direct: Within
everyone is an unlimited reservoir of energy, intelligence, and
happiness - and living that reality is the birthright of everyone.
Maharishi brought out the TM technique as a simple, effortless
procedure to harness this untapped potential. The technique,
Maharishi said, could be easily learned by anyone of any age,
culture, religion, or educational background. Today, five million
people practice the Transcendental Meditation Programme and the
technique is a household word around the world. In the following
interview, Maharishi discusses the nature of the mind and how the TM
technique works.
Maharishi, would you summarise your message?
The
nature of life is bliss. Everyone is born to enjoy, we are not born
to suffer. We have been hearing for centuries past that there is
great potentiality hidden within everyone. It is hidden in us not
because it is difficult to bring out, but simply because we are not
bringing it out, that is all. The storehouse of all wisdom,
creativity, peace, and happiness is there - the brain of man is
equipped with the ability to experience absolute bliss, absolute
happiness, absolute peace, absolute creativity, absolute wisdom. The
absolute field of life can be fathomed and experienced and lived
constantly by everyone. The only one thing to be done is to add
Transcendental Meditation as part of the daily routine.
What is the Transcendental Meditation technique?
Transcendental Meditation is a very natural, effortless procedure to
take the mind to the source of the thinking process, where the mind
becomes pure consciousness. It’s like a wave settling down on the
ocean, and then the wave becomes the unbounded ocean. So too, the
thinking mind settles down in the state of pure consciousness. And
this field of pure consciousness is a field of infinite creativity,
intelligence, and bliss. It is the pure field of natural law. When
the mind comes out of meditation, it comes out with more energy,
more creativity and intelligence, and behaves more and more
according to natural law.
Why
is it effortless?
Transcendental Meditation is effortless because it is natural. It is
based on a simple principle that the natural tendency of the human
mind is to go to a field of greater happiness. We do not need
training to go to a field of greater happiness. If you are listening
to one radio playing and another radio starts playing a more
attractive melody, no training is necessary to stop listening to the
first radio and to listen to a better melody. Before the question of
training can arise, you are already enjoying.
This
technique of Transcendental Meditation is just how to turn the mind
in the right direction. How to turn the mind just 180 degrees. One
step in this inward direction toward the ocean of happiness inside
and the mind finds increasing charm. This increasing charm attracts
the mind by itself. The mind is pulled by the gravity of great
happiness in that direction. It is a spontaneous march of the mind
inward towards the field of bliss.
How
is the Transcendental Meditation Programme different from other
forms of meditation?
It does not require any concentration or control of the mind.
Concentration brings tension. Concentration is a static process.
Transcendental Meditation is a dynamic process that takes the mind
from grosser levels to subtler levels of thought.
Can
anyone learn the TM technique? What does it require?
It requires just the desire to learn, and as anything is learned
from a teacher, so, too, Transcendental Meditation is learned from a
teacher. For these past 40 years, millions of people have learned TM
and they are gaining enlightenment.
What do you mean by enlightenment?
Enlightenment means lack of darkness, absence of darkness. And
absence of darkness means no mistakes, no weakness, no shortcomings
- success is everywhere, fulfilment of desire is everywhere. That is
enlightenment. When one is living in full accord with natural law,
spontaneously supported by nature, then we are not in the dark about
anything. This is enlightenment.
Some people may say that they don’t have time to meditate, they have
so much to do.
This kind of attitude is only due to not knowing how to perform
action with greatest vigour, how to be successful in action, how to
enjoy more and more, to enjoy permanently and in all aspects of
life.
Take a
simple example. If we want to shoot an arrow with great force ahead,
just grasp the arrow and pull it back. Some person who doesn’t know
about shooting the arrow with force will say, "What are you doing?
You have to shoot the arrow that way. Don’t pull it back!" Out of
ignorance he cries out, "Oh, I have no time to sit and meditate. I
have so much to do in the world, where is there time to meditate?
Why waste time, we are active people."
Transcendental Meditation is a process of creating a situation so
that all aspects of life begin to be worthwhile. By pulling the
arrow back, we are creating a situation where the force will be
greater. Transcendental Meditation brings the mind to that field of
silence, but that silence is a reservoir of all creativity,
intelligence, dynamism. If we want the mind to be more active in the
world, the process is to naturally pull it back, pull it back, pull
it back to the extent that it can be pulled back to its own source,
Transcendental Consciousness. Release it from there and the release
will be a tremendous force—any thought will be realised.
What do you mean by "Transcendental Consciousness?"
Transcendental Consciousness - calm, quiet, collected state of
consciousness—is that level of life where the full creative
potential of natural law is lively, and from where all the streams
of activity emerge in the most orderly way. It is the unified field
of natural law. Quantum theory has established that there is one
unified field of all the laws of nature at the basis of all
creativity. So when one transcends, one gets to that level of
intelligence that is all knowingness. This is enlightenment. And one
spontaneously begins to think better. Better means in every way -
right for everyone, useful for everyone, and quickly achieving the
desire. That is enlightenment.

Maharishi's Vedic Science |
Top |
The
fundamental knowledge of Maharishi Vedic University is Maharishi's Vedic
Science, which contains the knowledge of Natural Law and its practical
applications in the 40 areas of Veda and the Vedic Literature--total
knowledge of Natural Law in its most concentrated form.
Maharishi Mahesh
Yogi, founder of
Maharishi
Vedic University, defines his Vedic Science:
"My Vedic
Science is the science of Veda.
Veda means
knowledge. Therefore, my Vedic Science, the science of Veda, is the
science of complete knowledge.
Knowledge
results from the coming together of the knower, the process of knowing,
and the object of knowing--knowledge blossoms in the togetherness of
knower, process of knowing, and known. Therefore, knowledge is the
Unified Field of knower, process of knowing, and known; therefore,
My Vedic
Science, the science of knowledge, is the science of the Unified Field
of knower, process of knowing, and known.
In Vedic terms,
the Unified Field is called SAMHITA, the knower is called RISHI, the
process of knowing is called DEVATA, and the known is called CHHANDAS;
therefore,
My Vedic
Science, the science of the Unified Field of knower, process of knowing,
and known, is the science of Samhita of Rishi, Devata, and Chhandas. As
the Samhita of Rishi, Devata, and Chhandas is available to us as Rik
Veda Samhita, my Vedic Science is the science of Rik Veda.
Those who
practise the Transcendental Meditation technique have the experience
that Transcendental Consciousness is unbounded awareness--it is pure
wakefulness; it is fully awake within itself; it knows only itself and
nothing else.
Knowing itself
only, Transcendental Consciousness is the knower, it is the process of
knowing, and also it is the known--it is all three itself--it is
togetherness of the knower, knowing, and known. It is the Samhita of
Rishi, Devata, and Chhandas; therefore,
My Vedic
Science, the science of the Samhita of Rishi, Devata, Chhandas, is the
science of Transcendental Consciousness, which is self-referral
consciousness, or pure consciousness; therefore,
My Vedic
Science is the Science of Consciousness."
(from Vedic Knowledge for Everyone, 1994, pp. 154-157).
Maharishi's Vedic
Science is a complete science in that it gives complete understanding
and experience of all three components of knowledge--the knower, the
process of knowing, and the known.
Maharishi's Vedic
Science unfolds the knowledge of knower, process of knowing, and known
through study and direct experience of their unified basis, called in
terms of Vedic Science, Samhita--Transcendental Consciousness, the total
potential of creative intelligence. In terms of modern physics,
Transcendental Consciousness is understood as the Unified Field of
Natural Law, the self-interacting field of intelligence at the basis of
all the Laws of Nature.
RAAM—The
Global Development Currency

On the
auspicious occasion of Vijayaa Dashami,
Oct 26, 2001,
the Day of Victory according to the Vedic Calendar, Maharishi Global
Financing, The Netherlands, issued the RAAM, the Global Development
Currency of the Global Country of World Peace.
The RAAM is already in limited circulation, side by side with the Euro,
for residents of The Netherlands through a special issue of RAAM NL (see
prospectus); it is being used as a local currency in Vedic City,
Iowa, USA, side by side with the Dollar; and it will be made available
to all the cities and countries of the world where it is welcome as a
currency, in conformity with all the applicable rules and regulations of
those countries.
Agreements have
recently been made, for instance, with a farmers' association in South
America and with traditional leaders in Africa to start using the RAAM
as the Farmers' Currency for agricultural development projects. The RAAM
will act as a catalyst in the field of economy, enabling the development
projects to start, and transforming itself into hard currency after the
export of the crops.
In Holland, the
RAAM NL is already exchangeable for Euros at a fixed rate of 10 Euros
per RAAM at the Roermond branch of Fortis bank, one of the 20 largest
financial institutions in Europe.
World Peace
Bonds, backed by RAAM, are available in
Europe for residents of Denmark, Finland, The Netherlands, Sweden,
Switzerland and the UK. In the
USA World Peace Bonds are available in 35 states and territories.
Proceeds from these bonds will be used to accommodate and permanently

GERMAN
STUDY..........and comments of
...Pat Ryan .....
The
Various Implications Arising From the
Practice of Transcendental Meditation
On May 29,
1989 the West German High court
ruled the study valid.
Excerpts:
1.6.2.6
THE MANTRA AND STANDARDIZATION OF THE PROCEDURE OF THE
MEDITATION Meditation with the help of a mantra is a common
method and one in great demand in Hinduism. This is because of
the belief in the magical power of certain sounds or words, by
the use of which the initiated can attain godly powers. On
account of this the mantra must be kept secret. Although it is
said in the TM movement that the mantra is a sound without
meaning, the belief in the magical power of the mantra is still
maintained. It may not be exchanged, and has to be a certain one
chosen from Hinduism, which, according to its also does have a
traditional meaning: (for example a Hindu god). In order to
resolve the conflict between religiosity and scientific
appearances, Maharishi has deliberately mechanized and
standardized his meditation procedure. He has made it useful for
the needs of the westerner. The type of mantra given depends on
age, and the mantra is supposed to function automatically. The
checking of mistakes in the practice of meditation, (called
``checking'') also follows a 30 point procedure. This
standardization finds its theoretical expression in orgin, the
description: ``The mechanical path to God-realization.'' It is
the highest and most complete path to God-realization, which in
public is often paraphrased as self-realization by the TM
movement.
This
interest in the occult and parapsychological phenomena, as well
as the central role of evolution is their epistemology. This
shows an inner relationship with Aurobindo's teachings. A more
detailed analysis would almost certainly lead to the conclusion
that TM is very closely related to particular strands of
neo-Hinduism, more than would appear at first glance. But a
strong westernization has been intended from the start, evident
up to the standardization of the meditation process.~
4.1.9 The
initial positive meditation experiences together with the
promises and encouragement of the TM movement lead many to take
further courses. In these courses they become more deeply
involved in the teaching and ideology of transcendental
meditation. They believe in the effectiveness of TM even when in
the meantime negative experiences and results are evident. These
are interpreted as an on-going release of stress. Far reaching
changes in the perception of reality occurred, as well as
changes in self-evaluation and evaluation by others. The length
of time given to meditation each day increased in half of the
total cases, from 40 minutes to at least two to four hours
daily; in one case to more than eight hours. This tendency is
encouraged in courses, this at times being a direct instruction
to meditate longer each day. As well as this meditators invest
more time and energy in the TM movement.
4.3.3 TM
has a detrimental effect on the decision making process. There
is loss of self-determination and a turning toward the TM
authorities for guidance, i.e. in the case of important
decisions. Also, the variables, facial expression, bodily
posture, voice and handwriting point to the fact that the total
personality is gravely altered under the influence of TM.
4.5.4
Whereas before the TM phase performance at school was well above
average, and those investigated were most happy with their
school or job situation, a considerable worsening in these areas
occurred as a result of the practice of transcendental
meditation. 56% had decreased concentration abilities during the
TM phase, only 16% reported an improvement. 61% found it more
difficult to manage the workload, as against 13% who reported an
increased capacity. TM had a negative influence on the
professional careers of 58% of meditators. Altogether 28
meditators (42%) gave up their studies or professional career in
order to work full time for the TM movement or to be able to go
on long courses. They did this on the basis of promises made
them by the movement. An analysis of the taped interviews and
the stenographer's scripts only serve to strengthen the
suspicion that the TM organization aims at cheap labor, which in
the case of those people who became unfit to work in the course
of time, can be sent away again without any real difficulty.
4.6.6 In
76% of cases psychological disorders and illnesses occurred, 9%
of meditators had had therapeutic treatment before the TM phase,
43% had psychiatric treatment or had to have medical treatment
during the TM phase. The psychological disorders most prevalent
were tiredness (63%), ``states of anxiety'' (52%), depression
(45%), nervousness (39%), and regression (39%). 26% had a
nervous breakdown and 20% expressed serious suicidal tendencies.
Psychological illness already present before the TM phase
worsened considerably. TM can cause mental illness or at the
very least prepare the way for the onset of mental illness. A
lack of opportunity for the treatment of meditation experiences
and/or altered perception of reality create suitable conditions
for a pathogenic appearance. Added to this is the heightened
delicacy and increasing helplessness in the personality of the
meditator, which can develop into a complete depersonalization.
5.3.2
Karma and Stress. Maharishi had the idea of giving the
hinduistic concept "karma" the same significance as the concept
of "stress." In doing this, "stress" was attributed (in a
westernized form), hinduistic-religious concepts. TM had, for
the western world, the key with which all positive and negative
aspects of life could be afforded a paritcular significance. All
negative effects of the meditation are attributed to "bad karma"
or "knots of stress," when they occur in meditators. When either
during or after the meditation a meditator feels unwell, he is,
according to TM theory, "unstressing." TM doctors diagnose this.
Whoever
walks the road of "unstressing" should personally avoid all
possible outside causes of stress, since the atmosphere (around
him) could lead to a negative accumulation and consequently a
hindering of his own development.
The
personal unstressing on the part of the meditator has as a
consequence a reduction in contact with people and a reduction
in relationships. We can deduce here that the western concept of
"stress" (the curing of which constitutes a large part of the
promises made in TM advertising), has its cause in "karma." This
"relationship" between the two is only known to insiders.
5.6.4 The
suspicion grows that the meditation offered by TM, caused, in
the meditators' cases which we have investigated, a far reaching
alteration in the view of reality, which damages or causes
further damage to social relationships, the drive to achieve
(motivation) is considerably lessened, to the degree that
practical work (i.e. in a job) becomes intolerable to the
meditator, in addition to all conditions brought about by the
intense practice of the meditation, it gives rise to physical
and mental damage.
7.1.2
DECEPTION IN THE INITIATION INTO TM Even at the beginning of the
new meditator's contact with TM, he is being knowingly deceived.
The true meaning of the puja is kept from him and it is claimed
that mantras are specially chosen for the new initiates. In fact
they are given out according to the age group of the person
being initiated. Only one person knew during the initiation
ceremony that the puja was a religious invocation. None of the
meditators knew what the translation of the puja was, which is
celebrated in Sanskrit during the ceremony. All ex-meditators in
our study were told that the mantra was a sound without meaning
and none knew that the mantra was given out in a standardized
way (i.e. other people of the same age would receive the same
mantra). Every meditator kept the mantra a secret. That they all
kept the mantra to themselves is an indication of the strong
influence of TM and a foundation of further unquestioning
obedience to TM directives.
7.5 SIDHA-LANDS
In recent years there has been effort made by the TM movement to
set up economically self-sufficient Sidhalands, in which
meditators live and meditate, as well as having the opportunity
to work in one of the TM concerns set up there. This
institutionalization reflects the real attitudes of meditators.
The attitude of the emigrant, who withdraws from all areas of
social intercourse and can finally only be happy in his
meditation and its institutionalized form. One of TM's
formula/mottos, to `meditate and be active' is fulfilled in the
Sidha-lands. The double-talk employed by TM would rule out an
ordinary interpretation of this last sentence, i.e. that
meditation is only fulfilled or effective when the meditator
engages in energetic activity. Although TM gives this impression
by its use of everyday language in its advertising, what TM
really means by `meditate and be active' is something completely
different. The meditation and activity are directed solely
towards TM and its organization. Only when directed towards the
organization can a meditator engage in meaningful activity, and
in doing this he will also work effectively for his own
evolution. Therefore it is not an activity in the social sense
(social welfare) which is required, rather an activity in accord
with ``evolution'' and ``the laws of nature''. Sidhalands offer
the opportunity of undisturbed meditation, far away from outside
influence. In a sidhaland a person can wish himself anything he
desires; the Sidhaland becomes a land of milk and honey.
JUDGMENT OF GERMAN COURT
The ruling
of the highest federal administrative tribunal, the
Bundesverwaltungsgericht on May 24, 1989 in Case number 7 C 2.87
is:
1) The
Federal Government is competent and allowed to care about cults.
2) The
Federal Government is allowed to warn of
TM.
3) The
Federal Government is allowed to designate TM a ``Youth
Religion'' as well as a ``Psychogroup.''
4) The
Federal Government is allowed to say that TM is taught by
teachers who are not qualified [to deal with the TM problems].
5) The
Federal Government is allowed to say TM can cause
psychic defects or destruction of
personality.
The
Various Implications Arising From The Practice of Transcendental
Meditation
The study
was commissioned by the German Government Ministry of Youth,
Family and Health, the physical and social implications of the
practice of TM being of primary interest. The investigation has
as its aim to systematically establish the motives of an
individual for beginning TM, the implications of the practice
for this individual and his social circle, as well as to
pinpoint the reasons for a voluntary or involuntary ceasing of
TM meditation, or, in some cases, individuals distancing
themselves from the movement. Moreover the relationship between
the underlying world view, inherent in TM, and the practice as
presented to the public was analyzed as to its effect on some
individuals. The study offers an introduction into the teaching
and practice of TM based on the movement's own presentation of
itself and its aims, which in turn lead to the hidden religious
background. [Editor's Note: A translation is available from

to bring it to every man everywhere, I have come out."
-Maharishi 1960
Enjoy
your life and be happy.
Being happy is of the utmost importance.
Success in anything is through happiness.
More support of nature comes from being happy.
Under all circumstances be happy, even if you have to force it a bit to
change some long standing habits.
Just think of any negativity that comes to you as a raindrop falling
into the ocean of your bliss.
You may not always have an ocean of bliss, but think that way anyway and
it will help it come.
Doubting is not blissful and does not create happiness.
Be happy, healthy, and let all that love flow through your heart."
-Maharishi, 1987
Appreciation
"When you are appreciating creation as
much as the Creator, then the Creator will ask, 'Who is appreciating my
creation as much as me. Let me see this person.' " (August, 1970
Humboldt College
Attention
"What you put your attention on grows
strong in your life."
Attitude
"We must take situations as they are. We
must only change our mental attitudes towards them."
Behaviour
"People are influenced by what we are,
what we radiate. This has greater appeal than what we say."
Business
"Life is all business. Spend your energy
to get joy, happiness, evolution, and to gain more ability to enjoy. In
this field we spend our energy. We never use our time, energy, speech,
or ability to do something that doesn't help us grow and improve our
life. It's not worth it."
Capitalism
"Competition is for the competent."
Cognition
"There is nothing in the cosmos, either in
the material plane or the spiritual plane which cannot be directly
cognized."
Defeat
"If we think of defeat, that's what we'll
get.
If we are undecided then nothing will happen for us.
We must just pick something GREAT to do, and then DO it.
Never think of failure at all, for as we think now, that's what we'll
get."
Desires
"Decide what you want and don't think of
the intermediary conditions. When Nature works for us we should want
what we want and Nature will work it out for us."
"
Keep your desire turning back within and be patient.
Allow the fulfilment to come to you.
Gently resist the temptation to chase your dreams into the world;
pursue them in your heart until they disappear into the Self, and leave
them there.
It may take a little self-discipline, be simple, be kind, stay rested.
Attend to your own inner-health and happiness.
Happiness radiates like the fragrance from a flower and draws all good
things towards you.
Allow your love to nourish yourself as well as others.
Do not strain after your needs of life - it is sufficient to be quietly
alert and aware of them.
In this way life proceeds more naturally, effortlessly.
Life is here to enjoy."
Detractors
"When the elephant decides to walk through
the village, all the dogs come out and bark."
Doubt
"Doubts are death."
"Doubts are the dry rot of life."
Eating -
Grace
"In Thy fullness, my Lord,
Filled with thy grace,
For the purpose of union with Thee
And to satisfy and glorify Thy creation,
With thanks to Thee with all our hearts
And with all our love for Thee,
With all adoration for all Thy blessings
We accept thy gift as it has come to us.
The food is Thy blessing and in Thy service
We accept in all gratitude, my Lord."
Effectiveness
"Naturalness is the basis of
effectiveness."
Focus
"It is the focus on the highest ideal day
after day that saves life from being wrapped up in small whirlwinds."
Freedom
"All freedom to man, but freedom is useful
when we know what life is, when we know what past is, what present is,
when we know how to go about things, not that every man should be left
to experiment by himself."
Free
Will
"Well, you see, it is like this.
Absolutely everything is fixed, and absolutely everything can be changed
at any time."
Fulfilment
·
"Fulfilment is structured in achievement,
·
Achievement is structured in
action,
·
Action is structured in
thinking,
·
Thinking is structured in
knowledge,
·
Knowledge is structured in
consciousness"
Goals
"Decide what you want and don't think of
intermediary conditions. When Nature works for us, we should want what
we want and Nature will work it out for us."
Happiness
"We have an infinite number of reasons to
be happy, and a serious responsibility not be serious."
Humility
"About humility we speak with an analogy:
When the branches are full of fruit, they just bow down."
Impossible?
"What we have been saying from the
beginning of the Movement has been unbelievable but it has come to be
believed. We have been impossible right from the beginning and we must
continue to be impossible because we are raising a voice against
suffering which has been considered to be the nature of life. It is our
joy to be considered impossible - and it is our greater joy to make the
impossible a living reality."
Intelligence
"Everything is an expression of our own
intelligence. Through simple, innocent, natural unbounded awareness -
fullness of Self, all is accomplished -
-
Devotion
-
Positive influence on the entire universe
-
Nourishment of nature - thus gain the support of all the laws of
nature
-
Effectiveness
-
Fulfilment of responsibility
-
Togetherness in dynamism
-
Revelation of underlying principles of life
-
Following the routine without rigidity
-
Elimination of individual's weaknesses.
Only we should not be influenced by the
winds." - (December 1983)
Karma
"If you want to pay off your debts, it
pays to increase your earning power."
Life
"Life is bliss.
"Man is born to enjoy."
"Human nervous system is the greatest gift of the creator."
Love
"Love opens all doors, no matter how
closed they may be, no matter how rusty from lack of use. Your work is
to bring unity and harmony, to open all doors which have been closed for
a long time. Have patience and tolerance. Open your heart all the time."
"Personal love is concentrated universal love."
"Love in the heart of man is a shrine to God on Earth."
Meditation
"Meditate and enjoy."
"TM in the am and the pm."
"Water the root to enjoy the fruit."
"20 minutes in the bank, all day in the market place."
Mission
"I will fill the world with love and
create Heaven on Earth." (1959)
Nature
"Nature supports right action."
"Nature works in parallel ways."
"The nature of life is to more and more."
"If a man is able to submit himself to nature, then nature will react to
his needs. Almighty nature is all powerful and all loving, for the laws
of nature are for the creation and evolution of all beings and creatures
throughout the cosmos. There is no greater kindness than the kindness of
nature."
Opinions
"Do not base your life on the likings and
dislikings or whims of others. What you are in life - whether you enjoy
or suffer - it is your own responsibility. Be regular in your meditation
and do not postpone for a later date your striving for God
consciousness."
Opposition
"Do not oppose because in opposing the
tenderness of the feeling level is crushed.
All action should be to nourish the fine feeling developed in the
practice of the TM sidhi program.
That is why we say Speak the Truth but see that you are speaking
delicately.
Do not speak non-truth and do not speak in a non sweet way, so that the
feeling is nourished.
The whole effect of activity is to enrich the feeling of the other.
Be as delicate as possible.
If communication accomplishes something on the gross but damages
something on the level of feeling then it is a spiritual loss!
The feeling is more important for life.
Nourishment of the feeling level is the basis for growth of the
spiritual holistic value.
Delicate behaviour on the surface should be such as to nourish, uphold
and enhance the Transcendental value where feelings merge into a common
source.
Do not oppose.
Opposition is dangerous to immortality."
Organisation
"Nature knows best how to organise."
Politics
"Only a new seed will yield a new crop."
Planning
"Know what you want, decide when you want
it, figure your plan of action, follow through on it, and never doubt."
"Unless an action is rightly thought out and its steps rightly planned,
every stage of its performance will probably remain vague and therefore
unsatisfactory for the doer and all those concerned."
Problems
"Problems are all in your head."
"Problems are not solved on the level of problems. Analysing a problem
to find its solution is like trying to restore freshness to a leaf by
treating the leaf itself, whereas the solution lies in watering the
root."
"All problems in life arise from some weakness of mind. All weakness of
mind is due to the mind's ignorance of its own essential nature, which
is universal and the source of infinite energy and intelligence. ... In
order to root out any problem of life it is only necessary to be brought
out of ignorance, to be brought to knowledge."
Progress
"Well begun is half done."
"That which comes slow comes solid."
Punishment
"We are born only to bless, not to punish.
This you should never forget.
We should always see good things in others - very important.
We are not in a position to criticize anyone.
The existence of enemies means for us that our friendliness has not been
sufficient enough.
'God helps those who help themselves.' - it's a very true saying.
We are aware of darkness but for our own community we want to have
Enlightenment."
Purpose
"The purpose of life is the expansion of
happiness."
Asked why he brought TM to the West "For bliss."
Reincarnation
Asked if he believed in reincarnation: "I
am opposed to it."
Another time (holding a flower): "One carnation is enough."
Relationship
"Ideal relationship is based on giving."
Responsibility
"Responsibility can never be given. It can
only be taken."
"See the job, do the job, stay out of the misery."
Rules of
Life
Maharishi's nine rules of life:
1.
Don't analyze
2.
Don't complain
3.
Don't compare yourself to
others
4.
Don't expect things to be
done for you
5.
Don't expect perfection in
the relative
6.
Look to the knowledge aspect
daily
7.
Own the movement
8.
Problems are all in your
head
9.
Hold yourself together
Results
"The formula for producing maximum results
is to disregard the obstacles and negative influences which offer
resistance to the performance of action. The doer should engage in
action and continue until the desired results are achieved. When the
standard of consciousness is raised through the process of meditation,
the action performed at that higher level of life energy and
intelligence will have an overriding influence on karma from the past
and will produce maximum results.
This is how, by the regular practice of Transcendental Meditation
supplemented by the power of charity and virtuous deeds, the negative
influence of past karma can be counteracted and the path of present
karma smoothed. Then the action will be performed without resistance or
obstacle, yielding maximum results.
This is how, by the power of present action or karma, destiny is
controlled. Herein lies the full meaning of the saying that man is a
master of his own destiny."
Right
and Wrong
"We don't do what we know is wrong."
Seriously
"There is nothing in life to take
seriously except the joy of life".
Sleep
"Sleep in the bliss of God.
Feel love of God, Lie in the showers of his blessings.
Let your heart melt in the love of God.
Sleep in the love of God and in Love.
Sleep in the warmth of Divine Grace,
Without my words -- only in this feeling"
Stress
"There is nothing that can be said so
certainly about stress except that the amount of rest produced will
neutralise the corresponding intensity of stress."
Success
"The secret of success is conviction and
persistence."
"The secret of success in business is creativity. The urgent need in
business today is to develop the field of creativity that lies deep
within each individual. Through Transcendental Meditation the awareness
of the individual comes into contact with this field of unlimited
creativity, pure consciousness, the Constitution of the Universe."
Teaching
"The most effective teachers embody the
teaching they give out."
"A good teacher will appreciate the good qualities of his students. If
one good quality is allowed to emerge, a world of good qualities will
emerge from that one."
Time
"The factor of time is very vital in life.
Those who have accomplished great things in the world have been those
who valued time in their life. The time of life is limited and a great
amount of evolution has to be accomplished for fulfilment of life.
Therefore, the factor of time must be valued above everything."
Vedas
"This is the whole aim of the Vedas: that
no man engaged in the field of diversity--field of diversity means field
of death, field of change--no man engaged in the field of change should
ever be allowed to remain there all the time. He should be given the
opportunity, his body and mind should be cultured so that imperishable
state of eternal Being permeates all these changing phenomena in the
relative world."
War
"God grants us the faculty to open
ourselves to peace. If we don't then we are responsible if wars
continue."
Why dogs
look like their owners (and vice-versa)
"What you see you become."
Winds of
change
"If we are all strong, stable, we can set
our sail with any wind in the world that comes along. We make up our own
direction. If we are not strong, we are like a leaf in the wind and the
world's winds will take us where THEY wish, not where WE wish. So we
meditate, EVERY DAY, REGULARLY, and gain transcendental being in our
everyday life and then we are strong. When we are all infused with
Being, we need not think which course is right, we just take the one
that is automatically. Being is the wind-resister and the
sail-setter..."
Wisdom
"It is the responsibility of the older
generation to advise the young, to tell the child what is right and
wrong. Even if they do not want to listen to follow our direction, it is
right to tell them."
Yoga
Asanas
"In thy presence, O Lord,
Filled with Thy grace,
I am starting Yoga Asanas.
Grant me good health, energy, and efficiency in Life.
I feel Thy presence, Thy divine grace."
